When COVID-19 closed labs and universities, Emotiv Labs answered a pressing need: the world's first platform for remote EEG data collection — built for professional researchers and citizen scientists alike.
Challenge. The platform had to break from the conservative, scientific look of existing Emotiv apps to attract a broad audience, while still working atop the older Omniscience experiment-building system. Pandemic restrictions forced 100% remote operations and testing, and the diverse nature of remote experiments made data analysis hard.
What I did
- Built a vibrant new identity and UI that invited enthusiasts in without sacrificing scientific rigour.
- Added gamification — a levelling system with rewards and recognition — to drive uptake and participation.
- Used in-app surveys and feedback loops with beta users to test assumptions and iterate remotely.
- Designed workflows to improve data quality through better contact and signal quality.
